A hillside town on the Turquoise Trail

Madrid sits in a narrow valley along NM-14, the Turquoise Trail, between Santa Fe and the East Mountains — a former coal-mining town turned arts community, with homes and studios climbing the hillsides on either side of the highway. Lots are often small and steep, lanes are gravel, and every summer storm sends water down through town.

What works in Madrid

  • Short, steep drives in asphalt. The only surface that reliably stays put on these grades. Hillside driveways in Madrid.
  • Chip seal for lanes. A stone finish that suits the town's look and kills dust.
  • Drainage first. Uphill ditches, rundowns and armored outlets so water doesn't cut through the drive.
  • Small commercial lots. Paving the entrance and accessible parking for galleries and restaurants while keeping the rest gravel, if that's the look you want. See commercial lots.

Access and scheduling

NM-14 is a state highway, so work at a driveway connection may need an NMDOT access permit. Narrow lanes may call for smaller equipment. We plan both at the estimate and schedule around weekend crowds for businesses.
