Room to spread out
Algodones is a small, rural community in the river valley north of Bernalillo, along NM-313 near I-25. Properties are larger and often agricultural — hay, horses, equipment and long drives back from the road. The ground is flat and the soil can be silty near the river, so water tends to sit unless it's directed somewhere.
What we usually recommend
- Asphalt at the house. The parking area and the last stretch of drive — clean and firm.
- Chip seal or millings for the long run. Big savings over hot-mix on long distances. See chip seal and millings.
- Heavier sections where equipment turns. Barn entrances, hay storage and trailer parking.
- A crown and side ditches. So the drive sheds water instead of soaking it up.
- An apron at the road. Keeps mud off the pavement; work in a county or state right-of-way may need a permit.
Irrigation ditches
Many valley properties border acequias or irrigation ditches. We keep pavement and fill off ditch banks and easements and grade so runoff and sediment don't end up in the ditch.
